Time is ticking and before we know it
Rice Memorial High School
Will celebrate its
50th Anniversary!
History was made January 28, 1959! It was the day that Cathedral High School students, the Sisters, teachers and administrators scooped up their books and other belongings and left Cathedral on the corner of Pearl and St. Paul Sts. in Burlington and literally walked across town and up the hill to Proctor Avenue in South Burlington. Over 1,000 people marched that day! This was the being of a new chapter in Catholic education in Chittenden County called… Rice Memorial High School.
This year, a committee of alumni and faculty will begin planning for a series of events and dates that will celebrate the long-time history of our school and what has taken place in the past 50 years. At the same time, we will kick off the goals that will take Rice into the next 50!
If you want to get involved, we would love your help.
• We want to hear from anyone who walked that cold January day fifty years ago.
• We are also looking for grandparents who attended Rice who walked in 1959 and have grandchildren at Rice now.
• Memorabilia would be great…do you have a program from Stunt Nite1958 or a graduation tassel from 1959? Do you have pictures you would like to share with us?
• Committee members from each decade are needed and we will meet once a month for the next year.
Contact me at 862-6521, ext. 205, or at obrien@ricehs.org if you want to get involved!
What made
Cathedral special also makes Rice special. Alumni always ask if Rice is still great today. The answer is yes!
The traditions that began during World War I at Cathedral are here today: Catholic education, respect for life and others, academic excellence, great sports, great arts and a community that carries on. Stay tuned!
