Frequently Asked Financial Questions

How is financial need determined? Many factors are considered by P.S.A.S (Private School Aid Service) *, income being only one of them. Size of family, assets/liabilities, living expenses, etc. are all I taken into consideration. The process mirrors, to a certain extent, the process used when applying to college.

If I have more than one child attending Rice do I receive a discount? Not necessarily, although it certainly increases your chances of qualifying for aid. Having children attending other tuition charging schools, including college, also will increase your chances of qualifying.

Our family income is high enough that we are not likely to qualify. Why bother applying for aid? Although it's true that the higher the income the less likely it is that you will qualify, there are other factors considered. It is suggested going through the process at least once.

Being Catholic Increases the chance of qualifying? Parish membership has no bearing on whether you qualify or not. However, being Catholic certainly increases the likelihood of receiving aid if you do qualify.

How am I notified if I qualify for aid? P.S.A.S. sends a report to the school in March. The school in turn assesses need in lieu of funds available and determines the actual award. Rice will notify you by mail in March of the results.

* Private School Aid Service (P.S.A.S) is a company that Rice employs to assess the financial need of our families. It is the fairest and most confidential process available to us.

How is financial aid determined?
Many factors are used, income being one of them. It is important not to assume that you will or will not qualify based on income alone

Is there a discount for more than one child attending Rice?
There is no discount, but this certainly increases the likelihood of qualifying for financial aid.

Is there additional aid if you do not qualify for financial aid? There is a limited amount of additional aid available in the form of scholarships and work study. In order to qualify for a scholarship you must complete the financial aid application. Financial need is used to determine scholarship eligibility

Where do funds for financial aid come from? Aid funds come from a variety of revenue sources including parish and Diocesan support, fundraising, endowments, and memorial gifts.

Can I qualify for financial aid even if I am not Catholic? Although the majority of the aid available is reserved for Catholic students due to the source of money, a limited amount of aid is available for non-Catholic students.

Can I still qualify if I miss the February deadline? You can still apply for aid after the February 16th deadline date; however, the amount of your award could possibly be reduced.
